Electrical energy conversion into chemical energy has been considered one of the most important technologies to achieve carbon-neutrality by managing the fluctuation and volatility of renewable energy sources. Water electrolysis is one of the representative electrical energy conversion into green hydrogen, which can apply as eco-friend energy carrier. Our group is also interested in water electrolysis, but we are also interested in more complex electrochemical reactions that can produce more valuable chemicals than hydrogen. For example, our group has high expertise in carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) which produces various petroleum-based chemicals (i.e. syn gas, ethylene, ethanol) from CO2, a representative greenhouse gas. Beyond the reduction reaction, we are looking for an electrochemical oxidation reaction that can replace the worthless oxygen evolution reaction. Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation reaction to 2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is one of the examples of valuable oxidation reaction. Ultimately, we develop more economical and ecofriendly electrocatalytic systems by combining various new oxidation-reduction reactions.
