Research

Welcome to the Protein Biochemistry Laboratory!

Our lab is committed to understanding how living organisms sense external changes and react at the protein level. We focus on two key areas of research: the stress response in bacteria, and the way plants recognize signals. We use advanced techniques to explore the fine details of these processes and uncover the underlying mechanisms.

Stress Response in bacteria

In Bacillus subtilis, the model species of Gram-positive bacteria, stress signals from the environment are processed in a large protein complex known as the stressosome. We're working to figure out how these stress signals cause structural changes in sensor proteins and how this information is passed on to other proteins. To do this, we use proteomics to examine how proteins bind to each other in response to stress signals. We then use this data to investigate the structural changes that occur in sensor proteins and their binding partners. We also look at how these changes affect protein function through a range of biochemical tests.

Signal Recognition Systems in Plants

Plants have various ways to recognize and react to things like light, chemicals, temperature changes, and microorganisms. We're trying to understand the molecular aspects of these systems by studying the structure and function of the proteins involved. Using proteomics, we identify which proteins interact with each other and use this information to carry out detailed studies on their structure and function.

Multidisciplinary Approaches

To achieve our goals, we use a mix of methods, including proteomics, protein crystallography, spectroscopy, enzyme activity tests, and various biochemical analyses. These different approaches help us thoroughly investigate protein interactions and learn how each protein functions at the molecular level. Our lab is a collaborative space where researchers from diverse backgrounds work together to advance our knowledge of protein biochemistry, especially in the context of stress responses and signal recognition systems. We encourage creative thinking and teamwork to expand our understanding of these vital processes. Whether you're a student, a scientist, or just passionate about life sciences, we invite you to join us in exploring the world of protein biochemistry. Together, we aim to unlock the secrets behind the essential functions of life.
